At the bottom of the Gouffre de Proumeyssac, the “Cathedral of Crystal” of the Périgord Noir, an 80 cm ORA sphere awaits visitors at the end of a spectacular descent of more than a hundred metres. It tells the geological history of the region and the origin of this vast underground vault.
Located near Audrix, between Le Bugue and Les Eyzies, in the heart of the Périgord Noir, the Gouffre de Proumeyssac is nicknamed the “Cathedral of Crystal” for its vast underground vault covered with countless concretions. It is the largest developed cavity in Périgord. Discovered in 1907 by Gabriel Galou, the site is now run by the descendants of the discoverers, Stéphane Albié and Charlène Francès. Visitors go down through an equipped gallery or, for the more adventurous, aboard a cable car that recreates the conditions of the first exploration.
At the bottom of the cavern, as a permanent installation. After a spectacular descent of more than a hundred metres, visitors discover the 80 cm ORA sphere, resting at the bottom of the chasm.
The sphere reveals the region’s very particular geological history and helps visitors understand the karstic origin of these caves, carved by the dissolution of limestone and hydrogeological erosion.
An animated film created by the ORA team immerses visitors in a soundscape that acts as a musical backdrop to the geological history of the Périgord Noir. A three-option menu lets visitors choose between the region’s geology, the history of the Gouffre de Proumeyssac and the attractions offered on the site.
At the end of the descent, the sphere appears as a highlight, almost a Grail. It creates a world of sensations and invites visitors to step into the heart of the Cathedral of Crystal.
